Brushing Your Tongue Helps Keep Your Teeth Clean

Posted on 6/21/2021 by Watermark Dentistry
Brushing Your Tongue Helps Keep Your Teeth CleanIf you want to keep your teeth ultra clean, you should also brush your tongue. Just don't brush the surface of your teeth.

Why You Should Brush Your Tongue

Use a toothbrush to take remove the particles that become trapped between the lingual papillae of the tongue. These tiny projections can serve as a breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria. Therefore, cleaning the tongue will also aid in keeping the teeth cleaner and decay-free.

You Can Also Use a Tongue Scraper

If you normally brush with an electric toothbrush, you may want to use a tongue scraper instead. A tongue scraper can effectively clean the tongue of any coating or residue in the mouth, which will keep the breath fresher and the teeth cleaner at the same time. To use a tongue scraper, start about halfway back in the mouth and move the scraper toward the tip of the tongue. Always rinse and wipe off the scraper between each use. You should use a toothbrush in the same way. Move the brush toward the tip of the tongue during use. Whether you use a tongue scraper or manual toothbrush, you will get the same good results.

When You Should Brush the Tongue

While you can brush your tongue before or after you clean your teeth, it is best to brush it after you brush your teeth. This is especially helpful at night, as brushing the tongue and teeth reduces problems with morning breath. You can support these efforts by using an antibacterial mouthwash, or one that does not contain alcohol. Fighting off the bacteria that causes bad breath involves using the right methods for cleaning the breath and teeth. Ask us what you should use to ensure the health of your gums and teeth.

Do you currently have problems with bad breath? If so, try brushing your tongue for a cleaner mouth and teeth. Instead of using a mouthwash with alcohol (which can dry out the mouth and lead to problems with decay), brush your tongue after you brush your teeth. Again, you will realize better results.
